Best Binoculars for Observation and Outdoor Sports

The best binoculars in the simplest definition are the magnification tools, consisting of two telescopes mounted on a metal or plastic structure, so that a spectator can see the images as if they were much closer. The process by which this is done is the use of curved and slower lenses in the frame to enlarge the subject every time it passes through the next lens.

Many binoculars today use prisms that bend light when it enters the lens and help to enlarge the image as it passes through the frame. The result is small but very powerful binoculars. The professional binoculars are optical instruments most used in the world, in addition to the glasses, and have many different uses. Choosing the right binoculars for your specific motivation can be a challenge and this guide is intended to help you better understand binoculars to buy.

Aspects to Consider When Buying Binoculars

You have been thinking of buying binoculars for a long time, but you have no idea how they work or what is ideal for your needs. This practical guide on how to choose binoculars will help you in your search until you find the right one! The first thing to do is undoubtedly become familiar with the technical language and these basic features will make you understand the different potentials.

Magnification

The magnification indicates how close an object is compared to when viewed with the naked eye. For example, if you are looking at an object 100 meters away, with 10x magnification binoculars you will see it as if it were only 10 meters away. So when you buy, consider the distance, how detailed you want to see and if you need a compact or handy mount or binoculars.

Objective

The goal is given by the two lenses placed frontally measured in millimeters. The diameter of the lenses determines the amount of incoming light: the greater the aperture, the more light is captured, resulting in greater clarity of the images. But remember, the larger the opening, the more bulky and heavy the binoculars will be! For example, although an 8 × 20 offers limited vision, it is small and light, ideal for those who need great manual skills.

Leek Prisms VS Roof Prisms

There are two main types: those with leek prisms or with roof prisms.

Binoculars with leek prisms (which owe their name to the inventor) are generally recognized as the traditional ones and the tubes have the typical “V” shape. The technology used for leek prisms results in wide binoculars with well-separated lenses. They usually offer a good perception of depth. The only flaw is the lack of compactness and durability compared to binoculars with roof prisms.

The latter are generally more compact and have cylindrical and parallel tubes, allowing them to be more durable. However, the quality of these products makes them more expensive than traditional ones.

Field of View

By visual field, we mean the size of the visual window. Essentially, it refers to the larger dimension visible through binoculars. Some binoculars with the same magnification offer wider fields of view. These are called wide-angle and are preferred when observing fast-moving objects. Remember: the field of view decreases as the magnification increases, so if the wide visibility is what you are looking for then buy binoculars with limited magnification or wide-angle. Also, know that binoculars with leek prisms offer a bigger camp than those with roof prisms.

Ocular relief

Many wonder if it is possible to use them with glasses. The good news is that most products are made to allow for comfortable viewing even for people who wear glasses or sunglasses and offer longer eye relief. The eye relief is nothing more than the distance at which the images are projected from the lenses to the focal point and varies from 5 to 23 millimeters. The ideal, in general, is an ocular relief of at least 15 mm.

Diopter adjustment

Most quality products allow you to adjust the focus on one of the two eyepieces (usually the right) using a diopter regulator. The purpose of the diopter control is to compensate for the differences in your eyes, so you can see the images through binoculars as clearly as possible.

What do you want to use them for?

Hunting

For hunting, we recommend models completely covered in rubber, waterproof and anti-fog with a magnification between 7x and 10x for general hunting or between 12x and 16x for long-distance sports. Compactness is essential for moving hunters.

Bird Watching

8 × 42 binoculars are the standard for bird watchers, but 10 × 42, 10 × 50 and 12 × 50 models are needed for detailed observation of smaller and distant species; also compact binoculars with 30 mm lenses are recommended.

On a boat

Any waterproof model with a large lens diameter and rubber coating. The preferred types are 7 × 50, 7 × 42, 8 × 42 and 10 × 42.

Concerts / Theaters

Binoculars 5 × 25 and 8 × 25 wide-angle are preferable, or compact models 4 × 30, 7 × 18 and 7 × 21.

Outdoors

Any 7 × 35, 7 × 50, 8 × 42 and 10 × 42 will be perfect. Among the compact ones we suggest the 8 × 30 and 10 × 30. We also recommend waterproof models for camping.

General Use / Vacation / Excursions

For general use with limited needs, we suggest compact and wide-angle 7 × 35, 8 × 42, 10 × 42 and 10 × 50 binoculars.
