How do I choose the best Canon wide-angle lens?
The lenses are the most expensive things in photography, sometimes even more so than the camera itself. That’s why it is worth being well informed and reading the analysis and reviews that can be found on the Internet.
If you are thinking of buying a wide-angle lens, then I will tell you what criteria you should consider when deciding on one or the other.
Wide Angle: Take into account your camera’s Sensor Size
The first thing to keep in mind before buying a lens is the type of sensor your camera has. The size of the sensor determines the equivalent (real) focal length of your target. If your camera has a Full Frame sensor, then the focal length that marks the lens is the effective focal length, meaning that you are taking full advantage of your target.
However, if your sensor is smaller, you have to take into account the trim factor. For example, if the trim factor is 1.5x, for a 50mm lens, the equivalent focal length would be 50 * 1.5 = 75mm. It is as if you had mounted a 75mm on a full-frame sensor. This is very important when making a decision. To know what sensor your camera has, just look for your model on the internet and look at the specifications.
Take into account your camera’s Focal Length
The idea is to capture as much space as possible. So a wide-angle lens with a focal length of 24mm on an APS-C sensor with a 1.6x trim factor would show me an equivalent focal length of 24 * 1.6 = 38.4mm, so the viewing angle is a lot less than 24mm on a Full Frame sensor.
Everyone will know what they have in mind to photograph, so one way to know what focal length is best is to look at pictures made with each lens. There are many pages in which the EXIF data of the photographs, i.e., the parameters such as shutter speed, aperture, ISO, camera, lens, and focal length, are displayed. Therefore, if I have a full-frame sensor, I would have to look for targets that were 14mm to 40mm, since that is the actual focal length. For example, for APS-C, you could search for a lens with a focal length of 10mm, and it would stay at 10 * 1.6 = 16mm.
Filters
Another aspect to consider is whether we will use port filters. If this is the case, we will have to check that it is not going to be vignetted. These objectives have such a wide viewing angle that any element placed on them can be seen.
The same thing happens with circular thread filters. Let’s see if we need a slim filter that is thinner so it does not vignette.
The luminosity at a wide angle
The brightness of the lens is another important factor to consider. The type of photography that we do will determine this point. If I need a bright objective, it is because I will work in low-light conditions. For example, indoor or night photography.
Unless you acquire a fixed focal lens, the wide-angle objectives are usually not very bright, coming as much as /2.8, being the usual f/4. This would be ideal, especially if our purpose is night photography.
Remember that a step of more light means having to expose for half the time. The brighter lenses are more expensive. So you can always consider the option of uploading the ISO. When you have reached the maximum ISO and have opened the diaphragm to the limit, the speed will be decisive.
If you photograph static elements, it will not be a problem to shoot at slow speeds. There are even wide-angle lenses that have an image stabilizer or even the option to use a tripod. The problem comes when there is movement by people or objects. That’s when a more open diaphragm makes a difference.
Wide-Angle Lens: Focal
A zoom lens is more versatile since you cannot always scroll. In my case, when doing a lot of nature photography, the conditions do not allow me to place myself where I want, so I use Zoom.
However, in other situations, such as social photography, where there is more mobility, the same with a fixed focal objective is sufficient.
The advantage of fixed focal objectives is that they are usually cheaper and provide more quality. They also have a smaller size and weight. But more importantly, some models are much more luminous than a zoom lens, even reaching f/1.4.
An objective that supports the inclemency’s meteorological
If photographs are taken in conditions where the weather can affect the lens, both your camera and the lens must be sealed. So if it rains, do not pass anything because it gets wet. Dust can also be our worst enemy.
If this is not a problem for you, then you certainly do not need to consider this aspect, so you will get it cheaper.
First of all, quality
For me, quality is everything, although that has a price. Quality is another factor to take into account, and that depends a lot on how much money we are willing to spend. I used to say that fixed focal targets are cheaper, so if your idea is to have a quality target at a good price, it might be your best choice.
A number of factors influence an objective’s quality. We talk about optical quality. You need to take into account the optical quality of the glass in both the center and the corners.
